Alaska Department of Military & Veterans Affairs
Major General Craig E. Campbell is the adjutant general for the State of Alaska, commander of the Alaska National Guard and the commissioner of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. He is responsible to provide Army and Air National Guard military forces, a State Defense Force, and a Navy Militia that are fully prepared to protect Alaska from any threat, disaster, or emergency.
U.S. Army Alaska (USARAK)
USARAK deploys combat ready forces to support joint military operations worldwide; serves as the Joint Force Land Component Command (JFLCC) to support JTF-AK.
Fort Richardson
Like many Army installations, Fort Richardson, Alaska offers soldiers and their families, military retirees and it’s civilian work force, world-class facilities, outdoor recreation, and a variety of sports programs. Fort Richardson’s boundaries include more than 60,000 acres of landscaped and beautiful woodlands nestled along the Chugach Mountain Range, with main garrison about 7 miles east of Alaska’s largest urban city in the State. Fort Richardson is proud to be a member of the Anchorage community and our soldier and families participate in many programs and citywide activities.
Fort Wainwright
Home of United States Army Garrison and units of the United States Army Alaska (USARAK) including the 172d Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT), 4-123 rd Aviation and Medical Activity Alaska. Fort Wainwright offers soldiers and their families a special and unique place to live and serve. The Post is located in the Tanana River Valley just east of Fairbanks in the center of Alaska , America 's “Last Frontier.”
172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team
Deploys rapidly to a designated contingency area of operation by air and conducts operations either as a separate Brigade Combat Team or under the control of a contingency force headquarters.
Fort Greely
"The First Line in America's Missile Defense" is located 100 Miles southeast of Fairbanks.
Alaska Command (ALCOM)
Alaskan Command (ALCOM) forces are charged with maintaining air sovereignty, deploying forces for worldwide contingencies as directed by the Commander, Pacific Command, providing support to federal and state authorities during civil emergencies and conducting joint training for the rapid deployment of combat forces. The Alaskan Command is a sub-unified command of the United States Pacific Command. ALCOM is headquartered at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage, Alaska.
Eielson Air Force Base
home of the Iceman Team! As the northernmost U.S. fighter wing in the world, the 354th Fighter Wing's A/OA-10 Thunderbolt II and F-16 Viper aircraft provide our nation with combat ready forces capable of reaching anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere at a moment's notice. Eielson is also home to Cope Thunder, the largest aerial exercise in the Pacific region, held four times a year.
Elmendorf Air Force Base
Adjacent to the city of Anchorage - the largest Air Force installation in Alaska and home of the Headquarters, Alaskan Command (ALCOM), Alaskan NORAD Region (ANR), Eleventh Air Force (11th AF) and the 3rd Wing.
Alaska National Guard
The National Guard, the oldest component of the Armed Forces of the United States and one of the nation's longest-enduring institutions, celebrated its 368th birthday on December 13, 2004. The National Guard traces its history back to the earliest English colonies in North America. Responsible for their own defense, the colonists drew on English military tradition and organized their able-bodied male citizens into militias.
Alaska Air National Guard
The Air National Guard's mission is to provide well trained, well equipped men and women to augment the active force during national emergencies and war, and during times of peace, provide assistance for natural disasters and civil disturbances. Air National Guard units, under order of the Governor, provide protection of life and property, and preserve peace, order and public safety. State missions, funded by the individual states, include disaster relief in times of earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and forest fires, search and rescue, protection of vital public services, and support to civil defense.
U.S. Coast Guard, District 17 - Alaska
The U.S. Coast Guard is a military, multimission, maritime service and one of the nation’s five Armed Services. Its mission is to protect the public, the environment, and U.S. economic interests – in the nation’s ports and waterways, along the coast, on international waters, or in any maritime region as required to support national security.
Air Force Band of the Pacific
The Mission of the Band The Band of the Pacific is the oldest military unit continuously on active duty in Alaska. It provides popular, ceremonial, and patriotic music in support of military and civic activities in the states of Alaska and Hawaii and throughout Western Canada. The band also performs concerts and conducts musical workshops at local schools in support of education and recruiting efforts.
Alaska Military Youth Academy
The Alaska Military Youth Academy's ChalleNGe Program is designed to meet the life coping skills and educational needs of 16 to 18 year old Alaskans. The Youth ChalleNGe program is a 22 week residential school based on the traditional military training model. Cadets are instructed in the following areas: Life Coping Skills, Educational Excellence, Skills Training, Responsible Citizenship, Leadership/Followership, Health, Hygiene and Sex Education, Physical Fitness, and Community Involvement/Service Projects. In addition to these skills, cadets work toward the completion of a GED or High School Diploma.
Alaska Wing Civil Air Patrol
The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a volunteer organizations that conducts search and rescue operations, aerial reconnaissance for homeland security, counterdrug missions, aerospace education and cadet programs. The CAP is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) corporation, an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, and has more than 58,000 members nationwide, including 27,000 cadets ages 12- 21.
U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary
The overarching mission of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is to contribute to the safety and security of our citizens, ports, waterways and coastal regions. We will balance our missions of Recreational Boating Safety and Coast Guard Support with Maritime Homeland Security and other challenges that emerge as a result of our growing understanding of changes required in the post-9/11 era.
Operation Santa Claus
The Alaska Air National Guard originally started Operation Santa Claus in 1956 as a result of a request from St. Mary’s Mission for toys for their children. Guardsmen would accept new or used toys, in those days, from members of the Anchorage community. In turn, they would rehab the used toys, then hand them over to Santa Claus for delivery aboard an Air Guard C-123J provider aircraft to St. Mary's.
