Notary Commission Renewals

Commissions cannot be renewed. Each regular Notary commission is for a single four year period. Each commission has a specific starting date and a specific ending date that cannot be extended.

It's convenient to speak in terms of "renewing" a Notary commission (it's almost impossible not to!) but please keep in mind that as your current commission's Expiration date approaches, the only way to continue functioning as a notary is to apply for, and receive, a brand new commission.

There is no special application process for people who have previously been notaries or who have current commissions that are nearing expiration. Each application has the same requirements regardless of your current status as notary or your history serving as an Alaska Notary Public.

If you have a current commission that is about to expire and you receive your new commission while the current commission is still active, please remember to continue to use the Expiration dates of your current commission on all notarizations you perform while your current commission is still active. Your new commission's start date will never overlap with your old commission's expiration date and you should not begin using the new commission's expiration date until the new commission has officially started.
